City of Münster

In Münster you find everything you can wish for during an exciting short stay: A city with plenty of history as well as shopping opportunities and green spaces for cycling, inline skating or golfing. And not least, a unique supply of activities to enjoy art and culture alongside other pleasures. We wish you a wonderful time in our city.

Cathedral of St. Paul
The vast exterior and interior of the cathedral and its surrounding area are well worth seeing. Walking around the outside of the church, you will see the lifesize statue of Cardinal von Galen near the eastern wing under the linden trees on the cathedral square. Continuing you will come to Horsteberg, one of the oldest parts of the city. This quarter gives an impression of how Münster looked like generations ago. Here, you will also see the newly built cathedral chamber where the main reliquaries of the cathedral, the golden crucifix and head reliquary of St. Paul, dating from the 11th century, a rich collection of liturgical vestments and documentation of the architectural history of the cathedral are all on display. The garden hall of the Bishop's Court features walls covered with unusually large Delft tiles.

Hall of Peace
Münster was the centre of attention in Europe back in 1648. Representatives of the European powers negotiated here and in Osnabrück for five years to put a stop to the desultory fighting of the Thirty Years War. Münster's Gothic city hall was the site of the final peace negotiations which were held in the council chambers – now known as the "Friedenssaal" – the Hall of Peace.

St. Lambert's cages
The intersection of Roggemarkt, Alter Fischmarkt and Prinzipalmarkt is the location of St. Lambert's church and market square. Built between 1375 and 1450, this church is where Cardinal von Galen held his courageous sermons. The building is most famous for the gruesome tale of the cages attached to its ornate, neo-gothic steeple where corpses of the three leaders of the Anabaptist movement were put on public display.

The promenade
The city's promenade is 3 miles long and flanked by giant linden trees. In the springtime, their pale green foliage bathes strollers in soft light and their blossoms in summer fill the air with a fine sweet fragrance. The historic center of Münster lies within the promenade. But the peacefulness of the linden trees makes it hard to imagine that the pulsating, spirited life of the city is just a few steps away.

Kuhviertel
This historic quarter is popular for its spirited night life and congenial atmosphere found in the traditional student pubs and cozy restaurants. A favorite spot for enjoying a local brew is "Pinkus Müller". The locals enjoy relaxing here at the endless wooden tables carved with the initials of past generations.

Aasee
This artificial lake at the periphery of the city is a popular local recreation area. Named after the founder of the zoo, the sightseeing boat "Professor Landois" cruises across the lake and stops at the major attractions.
